When heat is added to a substance, the molecules and atoms vibrate faster. As atoms vibrate faster, the space between atoms increases. The motion and spacing of the particles determines the state of matter of the substance. ... Solids, liquids and gases all expand when heat is added.

Particles on heating obtain energy and thus are disturbed from their thermal equilibrium. To regain that equilibrium of state and remain neutral, they initiate motion to either pass on the additional energy to neighbouring particles or eliminate it from their surrounding system.
