it is because at Higher temperature the kinetic energy of the molecules is high and hence rate of diffusion is higher while at lower temperature rate of diffusion is slow hands one has to go close to smell it

When food is hot, diffusion is more. But in cold food diffusion is slow. Hence to get the smell from cold food we have to go close.
