Photosynthesis is called basic energy source beacuse this is only a process by which inorganic compounds get converted into organic compunds.

Thus, if we say that this is a most important process responsive for making life on earth. Then we shall not be wrong.

And 2)

It is better to call so beacuse in dark reaction of photosynthesis Calvin cycle occurs. Where combination of CO2 occurs with ribulose biphospahte.

All in it no light reaction ingredients occurs. So, we can say dark reaction as independent from light reaction.
