Give reasons for the following:
2) Fires caused by electric short circuit should not be doused with fire.
b) Food cans used for storing food items are coated with tin.
c) tron bridges are coated with zinc
d) Distilled water is a poor conductor of electricity while water drawn from a tube well
Conducts electricity
Answers
Answer:
2) The main reason is the risk of electrocution. Water is conductive in nature and hence the electricity in the equipment could reach the extinguisher (the person dousing the fire using water) and can electrocute him/her.
b) Tin is a non-reactive metal whereas iron is a reactive metal. If food is stored in an iron container, it might react with iron and get spoiled. Hence, tin is electroplated on iron to make cans used for storing food. Electroplating tin makes the container non-reactive and look better.
c) To resist corrosion.
d) In distilled water, all the positive ions and negative ions make up the water molecules, so there are no free ions to take electricity from different potentials. on the other hand, water from a tube well contains many minerals, which contain free ions which make it conduct electricity.
