The reasons for the following are given below -

  • Cooking pans have plastic handles because plastic is a bad conductor of heat so it protects the hands from getting burned by the heat of the utensil/pans.
  • Burning of plastic causes air pollution because, when plastic burns it releases certain toxic gases in the atmosphere like dioxins, furans, mercury and polychlorinated biphenyls which causes air pollution.
  • Nylon is used for making climbing ropes because of the great strength of nylon thread which can withstand heavy loads.
  • Refrigerators have a plastic foam core because plastic is a good insulator (or bad conductor) of heat. So, it does not allow heat to come inside the refrigerator.
  • Electric wires have a plastic covering because plastic is poor conductor of electricity that is it does not allow current to pass through it. So, it prevents from electric shocks.
  • Bakelite is used for making electric switches because it is a thermosetting plastic which means it is a poor conductor of both heat and electricity to protect us from getting electric currents.
