give reasons for the following (a) the light bends when it passes obliquely from one transparent medium to another. (b) glass is optically denser than water

The reasons of given statements are as follows -

a) The different transparent mediums have different amount of density. And, due to the different values of the density,the velocity of the light rays will be also different in those two mediums. For,this difference in the velocity of light ,the refraction of the light rays take place and the bending of the light ray can be observed.

b) Light rays travel at a slower speed in the glass medium than the water medium. And,a medium where the velocity of the light rays is slower,is known as the optically denser medium. That's why,the glass is optically denser than water.
