Competition from Homo Sapiens probably drove them extinct because they utilized their brain for imaginative ideas like agriculture, bows, and more improved hunting weapons which led to the food supply of the Neanderthals to well, go out. Neanderthals weren't unintelligent, they in fact have a bigger brain than modern day humans. However it was used for sharp thinking in intense situations, identification of natural plants and animals and improved smell, hearing and in comparison to our ancestors, better eyesight.
