Give reasons for the following :
(i) Covalent bonds are directional bonds while ionic bonds are nondirectional.
(ii) Water molecule has bent structure whereas carbon dioxide molecule is

PURE COVALENT bond are not directional but covalent molecule made of diff. element are directional.
          2. O in water has2 lone pair electron which repeal the bonded pair e of O-H
bond ,asa result water molecule bend but in carbon di oxide this type of lone pair absent in central atom carbon.

Answer:

(1) Covalent bonds are formed by sharing of electrons and higher electronegative elements participating in bonding attract the shared pair of electrons. Hence provide a directional character to the molecule whereas ionic bonds accompany complete transfer of electrons.

(2) In water molecule , the O atom has a lone pair so it repels the bond pairs and hence a bent structure is obtained where as in carbon dioxide C does not have a lone pair.

(3) Ethyne undergoes sp hybridization so it has a linear structure.
