Give reasons for the following.
(i) Phenol is more acidic than ethanol.
(ii) Boiling point of ethanol is higher in comparison to methoxymethane
(iii) (CH₃)₃C – O – CH₃ on reaction with HI gives CH₃OH and(CH₃)₃C – I as the main products and not (CH₃)₃C – OH andCH₃I.

1.In phenol, pulling the electrons from the oxygen atom into the ring causes the hydrogen atom to be more partially positive than it is in aliphatic alcohols. this mean in is much more easily lost from phenol that it is from aliphatic alcohols,so phenol has a stronger acidic property than ethanol.
2.ethanol undergoes intermolecular H-bonding due to the presence of -OH group, resulting in the association of molecules.extra energy is required to break this hydrogen bonds.on the other hand methoxymethane does not undergo H-bonding.Hense,the boiling point of ethanol is higher than that of methoxymethane.
3. because (CH3)3C + there is formation of3° stable carbocation and I-act as nucleophile and there is formation of CH3O- on whichH+ attacks and CH3OH forms.
