Wh y HCl does not give an acidic solution in benzene

This is because of the polarity of the solvents.

  • Aqueous solution (H2O) is very polar and will produce H+ ions when HCL is added, thus resulting in a acidic solution.

  • On the other hand, benzene, a nonpolar solvent will not produce H+ ions and no acidic properties.
