In 1938, Subhash Chandra Bose became the President of Congress, by influencing the Socialist and the Leftist wing in the Congress.

In 1989, he was re-elected by defeating Pattabhi Sitarmayya, who had Gandhi's support.

Gandhi felt that he was defeated, rather than Pattabi.

While choosing the Congress Working committee there was a sharp rift between Subhash Chandra Bose and Gandhi.

Gandhi disapproved Subhash's decision in choosing the committee. Because Gandhi found that Subhash was following violence in order to get indepedence.

The dispute cannot be resolved even by Nehru.

Subhash Chandra Bose was left helpless and left alone and hence he resigned from the Congress on 29th April 1939.
