this experiment was done by Rutherford. he take a wooden led and placed a positive changed Partical and placed slit at some distance by slit he makes a small holl and at some distance he placed gold foil by the positive light pass and move to movable screen by this process he discovers that and all lights goes straight but some lights get reflected on that place nuclear is present I think this helps you thanks

He selected the gold foil because the most malleable metal is gold and Rutherford wanted as thin as possible..The gold is about 1000 atoms thick..so he founded gold as suitable metal for his experiment..
