The layer of the ‘atmosphere’ becomes thinner with altitude because of two reasons.

1. The first reason is gravity because the earth’s gravity pulls the air as close to the surface.

2. The ‘second reason’ is because of the increase in altitude the number of gas molecules that are present in the air decrease.

Explanation:

  • It is much colder in the higher altitudes which are due to low air pressure.
  • The air expands when it rises and there are lesser molecules in the air and there is ‘less oxygen’ available for breathing.
