Rutherford's model

Ernst Rutherford was interested in knowing how the electron are arranged in a atom. He do a experiment for this. In this experiment, fast moving alpha particle were made to fall on a thin gold foil.

• He selected a gold foil because he wanted as thin a layer as possible. This gold foil was about 1000 atom thick

• alpha particles are doubly charged hellium ions. since they have a mass of 4 unit, the fast moving alpha particle have a considerable amount of energy

• It was expected that alpha particle could be deflected by the sub atomic particle in the gold atoms in the Alpha particles what much heavier than the proton he did not expect to see a large deflection

but the Alpha particle scattering experiment give a totally unexpected result the following observation were made :

* most of the first Alpha particle par Straight Through the gold foil.

* Some of the alpha particles are deflected by the foil by small angles.

* surprisingly one out of every 12000 particle appeared to the Rebound in the words of Rutherford this result was almost as incredible as if you fire A 15 inch shell at a piece of tissue paper and it comes back and hits you.
