Change in velocity is directly proportional to time when acceleration is constant. If velocity increases by a certain amount in a certain time, it should increase by twice that amount in twice the time.

Here's your answer !!
as we can see that by 1st equation of motion,
v=u+at
v-u=at
hence, a=(v-u)/t....(i).
therefore if we see the S.I units of speed and time, we get the time twice,
S.I unit of speed=m/s
S.I unit of time = s
by putting these units in equation (i).
we get a=m/s²
