Shylock was mercilessly treated by antonio.Antonio spat upon him and called him a dog...you can refer to the text Act 1 scene 3 i think soo...and Antonio borrowed an amount of three thousand ducats for his dearesr frnd bassanio risking his life ....Shylock said that if antonio is unable to pay the three thousand ducats then he would take a pound of flesh from his body.....

antonio has insulted shylock in the rialto where many mercahants gather upon him  , his business and his well earned money which he calls intrest . still the jew has tolarate  wuth a patient shrug because patience was a chief quality of their tribe
