Inertia is the tendency of an object to maintain its position i.e. to remain at rest or to continue to be in motion unless compelled by an external force or body.

Examples of Inertia of rest-
•Car at one place
•Sun
•Statue of Unity
•A book on table
•A leaf stucked on the tree
All the above objects are at rest i.e. they are stationary and they maintain their position unless compelled by any external force.
Note that the Sun can also be moved from its place if a Black Hole is present near to it or a star bigger than its mass is near to it.

Inertia of Motion.
Earth rotating around the sun
Moving car
Falling Raindrops
A light ray in a straight path

All this instances show that the object is in motion and will continue moving unless compelled by an external force.

Earth by any other planet
light ray again by a black hole which may turn or even stop the light rays

Inertia of rest is a common experience to have an acceleration when a vehicle starts moving from its position of rest. If we travel in a vehicle, our body is at rest inside it. When vehicle starts moving we also start moving but with a slight acceleration. This is called inertia of rest. Inertia of rest is the tendency of an object to continue its state of rest it is acting upon by an external force.

Inertia of motion: When the person gets down from a running bus due to inertia of motion he tends to move forward even though he touches down the ground with his feet. So, he topples forward even after getting down. This confidently explains inertia of motion as the tendency of the body to move even when the motion stopped.
