NORTHERN PLAINS: northern plains was formed by the deposits brought in by the  three major rivers and there tributaries 1.brahmaputra 2.indus 3.ganga are three major rivers alluvium was deposited at foot - hills of the himalayas for the millions of years . these deposits are now the fertile northern plains.alluvium is the soil or sediments deposited by a river or other running water alluvium is typically made up with variety of materials ,like fine particle of silt and clay and larger particles of gravel
detail about northern plain 
area: the northern plains are roughly 7 lakh sq.km in size . it is 2400 km long and 240 to 320 km broad
crop: the crops grown primitively in the northern plain is rice and wheat
divisions of northern plains:
1. the punjab plains formed by indus and its tributaries 
2. the ganga plains formed by ganga river which lies between river ghagar to teesta river.
3. the bramahputra plains are formed  or fed by the river brahmaputra
