The Bishop’s Candlesticks [Class 9]
- Norman Mckinnell
Summary :
The story revolves around a Bishop, his sister Persome & a Convict. The Bishop is a philanthropist & his sister Persome is very much concerned about him. Thus, she criticizes his act of selling all his belongings to serve people. The only thing left unsold is the silver candlesticks which were gifted by his mother on the death bed.
One night, a Convict breaks into the Bishop’s house & threatens them with a sharp knife. Bishop & Persome serves him food & makes bed for him. Then, he narrates his story on how the Police converted a man into a beast who has now escaped from prison.
Later at night, he steals the candlesticks & runs away though he feels soft. He is captured & brought back by the Policemen. He expects imprisonment, but the Bishop saved him from the Police by addressing him as his friend.
This act of Bishop fills the Convict’s heart with remorse & regret. Finally, he turns into a man again. He seeks the Bishop’s blessings & goes to Paris as a changed man! This chapter gives us the moral that "there is God within everyone!”.
