Gravity is one of nature's four fundamental forces (the others are the electromagnetic force, the nuclear strong force and the nuclear weak force).  It is universal.  (Only gravity and the electromagnetic force are apparent on a macroscopic scale.)

Unlike the electromagnetic force, gravity does not disguise itself as friction, drag, tension, compression or any sort of contact force.

Gravity is the weakest of the four fundamental forces, so weak that it can be completely ignored in interactions on a molecular scale and smaller.  The gravitation attraction between two electrons is roughly 1039 times weaker than their electrical repulsion.

Gravity weakens with distance in proportion to the separation between two interacting bodies squared, r -2.  The two nuclear forces weaken much more rapidly with increasing distance, so much so that these two forces are negligible at distances the size of an atom or larger.  The electromagnetic force also weakens with increasing separation in proportion to r -2, but the electromagnetic force can be cancelled, because of the existence of both positive and negative charge.  There is no analogous negative mass, so gravitational forces cannot be cancelled.  Thus at large distances, gravity, the weakling, becomes the dominant force and is the only force that needs to be considered for most interactions on an astronomical distance scale.
