Ali is the central character.He has deep love for his daughter who is married to a soldier.Separation from her makes him compassionate.He gives up hunting innocent animals .He becomes worried and anxious when he receives no letter from his daughter.He begins to visit the post office daily.Years pass by but he receives no letter.His condition becomes pathetic.But such is the power of love that he becomes strong enough to withstand all words to ridicule hurled at him daily by the heartless employees of the post office.His health deteriorates and he dies one day.

The chapter deals with the story of a old young man Ali who went to the post office daily in search for his daughter's letter.

Ali was a brilliant hunter who left hunting after he realized the pain behind separation. He had only one daughter Miriam who went to Punjab after her marriage and Ali was left all alone.

He went to the post office daily in hope of getting a letter from her daughter but unfortunately was never able to get it.
