when electricity is pass through the aq. solution of sodium chloride it decompose to form sodium hydroxide .this process is called chlor alkali process.
reaction:
2NaCl(aq)+ 2H2O(l) = 2NaOH (aq) +Cl2(g) +H2 (g)

in cathod= hydrogen gas
in anod= chlorine

uses:
hydrogen =fules ,ammoniun for fertiliserz
chlorine = water treatment, pesticides.

wisemen: is this reaction an example of electrolytic decomposition reaction????
