most of them have muscular tail. they have dorsal hollow nerve chord. they 12pairs of cranial nerves. they 2-4chambered heart. they have 2 pairs of limbs. their skin have oil and sweat glands.

Vertebrates can be classified in 5 groups-
i) Fishes: Cold blooded animals which generally breath with the help of gills under water. Characteristic feature is presence of fins.
ii) Amphibians: Cold blooded animals which can live both in water and on land, have smooth moist skin.
iii) Reptiles: These are also cold blooded, have dry and scaly skin.
iv) Birds: Warm blooded, lay eggs, generally have feathers and wings.
v) Mammals: Warm blooded, have hair, produce milk for offspring, give birth to offspring directly(not by laying eggs).
The first four classes lay egg.
