The primary function of the plasma membrane is to protect the cell from its surroundings. Composed of a phospholipid bilayer with embedded proteins, the plasma membrane is selectively permeable to ions and organic molecules and regulates the movement of substances in and out of cells

  • It is a selectively permeable membrane. It permits the entry and exit of materials in the cell.
  • It acts as an effective barrier to the free diffusion of most molecules of biological significance.
  • It surrounds a cell and separates the cytoplasm.
  • It keep toxic substances out of the cell.

Hope that helps.
