The primary function of the respiratory system is to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide. Inhaled oxygen enters the lungs and reaches the alveoli. The layers of cells lining the alveoli and the surrounding capillaries are each only one cell thick and are in very close contact with each other.

The function of the capillary network of alveoli:

• The alveoli are enclosed by tiny blood vessels, termed capillaries.

• The alveoli and capillaries both have very tinny walls, which let the oxygen to pass from the alveoli to the blood.

• The capillaries then unite to larger blood vessels, named veins, which carry the oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart.

Hope it helped...
