The importance of Maxwell's equations cannot be overstated. Briefly, it introduced the notion of the field to physics and paved the way for relativity. Before Maxwell's equations came along, physics was all just particles influencing each other by action at a distance. After Maxwell's equations physics was particles influencing each other via intermediary fields. The field enabled one particle to act on another in a two stage process. Particles create fields, which spread out in all directions; the fields, in turn, influence the particles as they pass them. Particles are influenced by the arrival of fields from other particles.
