Pest resistant GM crops (primarily cotton and maize), have been genetically modified so they are toxic to certain insects. They are often called Bt crops because the introduced genes were originally identified in a bacterial species called Bacillus thuringiensis. These bacteria produce a group of toxins called Cry toxins.

The names of two insect resistant varieties of crop are as follows:
- Bt Cotton
- Bt tomato
Explanation:
A toxin named Bt is produced by bacterial strain called as Bacillus thuringiensis. This toxin was identified to be highly dangerous for the insects which were causing severe damages to the crop. Thus, scientist with the help of genetic engineering process, incorporated this toxin producing gene in plants and converts them as insect resistant plant.
Through this process many insect resistant plant varieties such as Bt cotton, Bt soybean, Bt Tomato, Bt Brinjal, etc., has been produced.
