Broadly there are two types of twins:

 i) Fraternal twins,

ii) Identical twins.

Fraternal twins are alternately named as dizygotic twins, are the most common. They can be of the combination of boy/girl, girl/girl or boy/boy. Boy/girl twins are most commonly found.

Identical twins, alternately called monozygotic twins, are very rarely found. Identical twins have always same-sex; either boy/boy or girl/girl.

Fraternal Twins - Fraternal twins produced by the mother releasing more multiple eggs during her menstruation cycle. The cause is either hereditary or result of fertility treatment.

In the event of two eggs are fertilized by two individual sperm cells, fraternal twins are formed.

Identical Twins - Identical twins are produced from one egg that is fertilized by one sperm and then, itself splits in half, forming two eggs. Twins of the identical type have same DNA.
