Through this experiment, Rutherford observed that when many alpha particles are passed through a gold foil, some passed straight through the foil, some deflected at small angles while a very few (1 out of 10000) completely turned its path backwards.

• Some of the alpha particles deviated or deflected from their path by some angle.
