The effect of seeing lightning before hearing thunder is attributed to the speed of light vs. the speed of sound. Light travels at 299,792,458 meters per second where as sound travels slower at 240.29 meters per second (at sea level).
Since light is faster than sound, you see lightning before you hear thunder

Speed of Light (i.e. 2.99 × 10^8 m/s) in air is quite greater than that of speed of sound (i.e. 340 m/s).
Since, The Speed of Light is greater than that of sound so it takes much less tunes to reach us than the sound, so we are able to see the the thunder before we could hear the lightning sound.
