Symmetry of d-orbitals may be of axial or non-axial type.

  • In isolated free state, each of the d orbitals (dxy, dyz, dzx, dx2-y2, dz2) have the same energy and are called degenerate orbitals.
  • On the basis of their orientation with the coordinate axis, they are grouped into eg (evenly degenerate) and t2g (triply degenerate) orbitals. eg comprises of dx2-y2 and dz2 orbitals as they lie along the axes.
  • t2g comprises of dxy, dyz, and dzx orbitals as they lie in between the axes.
