The nobility under King Rajendra Bir Bikram Shah were always bickering and there was silent infighting between the different factions. Fed up with the weak and incapable rule of King Rajendra Bir Bikram Shah, in 1846, the then Kaji – Jang Bahadur Kunwar and his brothers revolted and killed 30 – 40 civil and military officials and guards, the Prime Minister and relatives of the King, attached to the Nepalese Royal Palace Court.

King Rajendra Bir Bikram Shah (1813 – 1881) was the King of Nepal from 1816 to 1847.

Rajendra Bir Bikram Shah, the king of Nepal, in the year 1843 declared that his younger queen Rajyalakshmi would be his legal advisor in the matters of ruling the country.

He even compelled his subjects to follow her order and not that of his son, Surendra Bikram Shah.

All this led to the revolt, known as the Kot Massacre that occurred in the year 1846.
