Anthocerotae also called as Anthocerotophyta are commonly known as Hornworts. Few examples are Dendroceros, Anthoceros, Megaceros, Folioceros.
- Anthocerotophyta is a division of bryophytes.
- They are non- vascular plants that usually grow on damp soils and rocks.
- They have two phases of life. Sporophyte and gametophyte.
- Gametophyte is called thallus which is green sheet like upon which spores (gametes) are formed.
- Male and female spores are borne on thallus named as anthredium and archegonium respectively.
- Gametes fuse and zygote is formed that grow into sporophyte which is needle like or horn like having tapered ends.
Genus Dendroceros, Anthoceros, Megaceros and Folioceros are few examples belonging to Anthocerota.
