The functions of the municipal corporation and municipal councils are similar. They perform many important administrative works. They perform their functions with the the help of different departments.

The various functions performed by the municipal corporation and councils are:-

• Garbage collection department arranges for the collection and disposal of garbage.
• They look after the drainage facilities and ensure a clean environment for the people.
• Water works department provides safe drinking water to the city.
• They establish hospitals, dispensaries and other medical centres in different areas.
• They arrange for vaccinations and insulations to protect people from diseases like smallpox, tuberculosis, cholera etc. and also take steps to prevent the spread of any epidemic.
• They provide cheap and efficient transport facilities in cities.
• Supply electricity to houses and factories and ensure proper lighting of streets.
• They maintain records of birth and death, marriage, migration, castes, religions and issue certificates for the same.
• They keep land records, houses, commercial properties and get other constructions done within the city or the town concerned.
• Public works department constructs and maintain roads, streets, bridges and public buildings.
