Answer:
The following are the reasons for industrial stagnation during British rule in India :
a) British economic policies were against interest of Indian trade and industry.
The English East India Company used its political power to destroy Indian handicrafts and trade. India became colony of buying cheap goods and selling finished products.
This policy crippled artists and craftsmen as they were deprived of their livelihood.
b) British government made no policy to promote Indian trade and industries. Also it monopolised certain industries like of jute, tea, coffee, rubber, etc.
c) Most of the raw materials produced in India were transported to Britain which eventually increased their industrial production. But due to this India rapidly declined as industrial and manufacturing sector.
d) The British by following ' Free Trade' ruined Indian handicrafts and textile industries. While no import duties were levied on the British goods entering India , high duties were imposed on Indian goods entering Britain.
