Give two reasons why Thar is a desert.

Thar is known to be a desert area because of lower water resource which lead to less population.
Moreover the Aravaili hills present near the Thar desert obstructs the rainfall of south west monsoon.
This causes low rainfall in these region.

The two reasons are -

• In winter, the winds are offshore winds.
• It lies on the leeward sides of the Aravils which are very low and these winds run parallel to the Aravalis and get dry when they reach the other side.
