Wood charcoal is used as a fuel. It is an important constituent of gunpowder. (d) Sugar charcoal: Sugar charcoal is mostly used as a reducing agent.

Sugar charcoal is used to prepare artificial diamonds. When heated strongly at high temperature (3000 °C-3500 °C) and high pressure, it is converted into an artificial diamond. It is used as a reducing agent in the process of extraction of metals. It can also be used as a decolourising agent, and as a reducing agent.

Uses of Bone charcoal: It is extensively used to decolourise cane sugar in the process of manufacturing sugar. It is also used in the manufacture of a large number of phosphorous compounds.
