We have to do - Find the mass of the small cup filled with 20 ml of water and the container that holds the salt (all at the same time). Predict whether the mass will change after the salt is mixed into the water.

Add the salt to the water and mix the solution with a spoon. Be sure to not lose any of the salt or water during the mixing.

Find the mass of the cup, salt-water mixture, and the empty salt container.

Conclusion - Salt is dissolved in water and does not affect mass.

Experiment II.

Chemical reaction of soap and water

We have to do - Add soap to water.

Conclusion - When soap is added to water, the ionic-salt end of the molecule is attracted to water and dissolved in it. The non-polar hydrocarbon end of the soap molecule is repelled by water. A drop or two of soap in water forms a monolayer on the water surface as shown in the graphics on the left.
