Glass is used to make windows because Transparent outdoor plastics like PMMA (Acrylic) or polycarbonate (Lexan) will last up to 20 years or so but will ultimately become brittle, murky and crack. Glass, on the other hand, is unaffected by UV rays, sound etc.
