Endemic goitre is more common among girls than boys and among women than men. It occurs most frequently in inland or mountainous regions where the natural iodine content of the water and soil is very low. It can be easily prevented by use of salt or food to which iodine has been added.

The only reason is tht iodine lacks in mountain soil and hence in the food grown there so ppl lack iodine in their diet, which is an active ingredient in production of Thryoxine which prevents goitre.
