Golkonda fort is a fort situated 11 km west of Hyderabad in Telangana, India. It was the capital of the medieval sultanate of the Qutb Shahi dynasty (c.1518–1687). It is a citadel and fort both and is round-shaped so the name Golkanda was given. It was initially called Mankal. It was constructed during the reign of Kakatiya dynasty. Many popular diamonds have been excavated from the mines of Golkonda viz., Daria-i-Noor, Noor-ul-Ain, Koh-i-Noor, Hope Diamond, etc. It was once used a vault to store and protect the world famous Kohinoor diamond.
This fort has been listed as an archaeological treasure on the official "List of Monuments" . This list is always maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India under The Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act.
