Golden fibre refers to Jute.
Jute is known as the golden fibre because of its yellowish brown, shiny, natural vegetable fibre produced from the plants of genus Corchorus. Jute is used in manufacturing textiles and packing materials. It earns our country valuable foreign currency through exports. Jute occupies place next to cotton in the amount produced and the variety of uses. Due to its inherent high tensile growth, low extensibility, moderate moisture retention and better breathability, jute is used extensively in agricultural bulk packaging.
Jute requires a high temperature of 30 degrees Celsius and rainfall of more than 150 cm. Well drained fertile alluvial and loamy soils are ideal for cultivation of jute. Cheap and skilled labor is required to obtain the fibre by retting of the plant.
