Gonadotropins (LH, FSH) are hormones synthesized, secreted, and released by gonadotrophs present in the anterior region of the pituitary gland.

Explanation:

  • Gonadotropins are reproductive hormones which activate the gonads (testes and ovaries).
  • They stimulate the synthesis of sex hormones and production of sperms or ovum respectively.
  • In male testes, they stimulate the production of testosterone and the production of sperms.
  • In the female ovary, they stimulate the ovum production or ovulation and in follicular maturation.
  • The secretion of gonadotropins is controlled by the gonadotropin-releasing hormone released by hypothalamus of brain.
  • Gonadotropins are used medically during fertility treatments like production of mature follicles, induction of ovulation, increasing sperm count etc .
