Properties of bases -

1. Bases have bitter taste .

2. Bases feel soapy to touch.

3. Bases conduct electricity in sodium (they are electrolyte).

4. Bases turn red litmus paper to blue.

5. Bases reacts with acid to form salt and water.

6. Bases reacts with some metal to form hydrogen gas.

1. Some bases like sodium hydroxide is used in the manufacture of soap, paper and rayon.

2. Bases like calcium hydroxide (slaked lime) is used in making bleaching powder.

3. Sodium carbonate which is a base is used in washing soda and for softening hard water.

4. Bases like magnesium hydroxide is used as an 'antacid' to neutralise excess acid in the stomach and cure indigestion.

5. Sodium hydrogencarbonate is used as baking soda in cooking, for making baking powder, as an antacid to cure indigestion and in soda-acid fire extinguisher.
