geostationary satellite-An object is said to be geo stationary if it moves with the velocity of the earth over a selected area.these move from west to east because the earth rotates from west to east.
polar satellite-An object is said to be polar satellite if it moves on the polar axis means from north to south or south to north.these are used for weather forecasting

Geostationary satellite is a satellite that revolves around the earth in its equatorial plane with the same angular speed and in the same direction as the earth earth rotates about its own axis. Since it appears stationary to an observer on the earth, it is called as synchronous satellite. When this type of a satellite is used for communication purposes, it is called as communication satellite
Polar satellite:
It is a satellite that revolves around the earth in its polar orbit (perpendicular to the equatorial plane). As the earth rotates about its axis, a polar satellite successively passes through different points on the earth’s surface, hence scanning the entire earth. Examples are: SPOT, IERS, etc..
