hi....

since OM is perpendicular to AB.
therefore, AM IS HALF OF AB.
therefore AM is equal to half of the length of the chord
that is, 4 cm.

NOW IN RIGHT TRIANGLE OMA,
OM SQ.= OA SQ - AM SQ.
9 CM

Hey!!
Here is your answer.

In the adjoining figure,
AB = 8 cm
OA = 5 cm

AB = 2 AM..... Because OM is perpendicular to AB...given

8 cm = 2 AM
 \frac{8}{2} = AM\\ \\ 4 \: cm \: = \: AM

 In \: \triangle \: OMA \\ \angle \: OMA \: = 90 {}^{0}

By Pythagoras theorem..
 {AM}^{2} + {OM}^{2} = {ao}^{2}

 {4}^{2} + {OM}^{2} = {5}^{2}
 {OM}^{2} = {5}^{2} - 4 {}^{2} \\ {OM}^{2} = 25 - 16 \\ {OM}^{2} = 9 \\ OM = \sqrt{9 } \\ OM = 3 \: cm

Answer,
Length of OM is 3 cm.
