Air pollution in India is major concern to public health. The main pollutants in metro cities in India are
sulphur dioxide (SO2),
oxides of nitrogen (NOx)
suspended particulate matter (SPM)
respirable particulate matter (PM10).
Green house gases like Carbon dioxide , methane etc and pollutants like carbon monoxide and Hydrocarbons etc are also included in broad sence . Now the Indian subcontinent is blessed by Monsoon which scrub out pollutants in rainy season . But the real problem arises in winter season when the weather is calm and there is least air mixing . Moreover the rural practices of burning agricultural waste and firewood worsens the situation. Air pollution is not just product of metro cities but surrounding areas too.
So here are the various measures that can be execute to reduce air pollution in India :
STOPPING THE USE OF FUELWOOD AND BIOMASS BURNINGS : The burning of firewood , agricultural waste garbage etc should be minimize . It is biggest contributer source of PM 10 , PM 2 ,Carbon dioxide , Methane etc. It is prominent in rural areas . To minimize it , there is need to create awareness in rural as well as urban population . We can reduce it by garbage segregation , using bio decomposition composters , using biogas digester as fuel source etc .
VEHICULAR EMISSIONS CONTROL : Vehicle emissions can be control by minimizing private usage of vehicles , use of public transport , use of efficient engine etc. Indian metros needs at least one reliable mass public transport system to kept people from using private vehicles. Metro , monorail , BRTS , suburban trains and tramway can play important role in these context . Fuel adulteration is major cause of tailpipe pollution . We should create awareness amongs the people for proper usage of fuel . We should introduce strict norms under Bharat stage emissions standards and ban the excessive use of diesel vehicles .
CHANGING THE WAY OF PRODUCING ELECTRICITY : About 65% of electricity in India is produce by thermal power plants . They are largest source of green house gases as well as fly ash , dust , PM10 etc . We should switch our electricity production to more greener alternative like Nuclear power plants and over the time to eco friendly energy sources.
TRANSITION TO RENEWABLE ENERGY: It can help in reducing energy demand from conventional energy sources .
PARKS AND FOUNTAINS : Plantations of broad leaf trees in metro areas helps in reducing suspended dust and particulate matters . Fountain acts as scrubber and reducing dust and PMs. We should develop small forest areas near metros as they will act as natural purifiers .
REDUCING INDUSTRIAL POLLUTION :Norms should be introduced to reduce industrial pollution . Devices like scrubbers , ARMs should be used to minimize pollution.
