Active: A delicate instrument records the movement of the ground.

Passive: The movement of the ground is recorded by a delicate instrument.

As you probably know, the instrument mentioned is a seismometer.

Also, definitions of words tend to sound awkward in passive voice. Even if it’s grammatically correct, it isn’t idiomatic.
