Answer:

"The Portrait of a Lady" is a beautiful piece written by Khushwant Singh.

In the story the author paints a beautiful image of the grandmother and her character.

In the story we can see the changing relationship between the author and his grandmother as the context and surrounding changes. In the beginning of the story the grandmothers character was painted as warm and loving but as time passes the relationship between the author gets more complex. As the author grew up they both didn't talk much often and they grew apart. When the author decided to go abroad the grandmother didn't seem sentimental at all and only gave him a kiss on his forehead. When the author returned the grandmother was overjoyed and called all the women in her neighborhood to sing. She strained her throat which eventually lead to her being sick which then lead to her death. From this example we can see how much the grandmother must have missed the authors presence. This shows that the grandmother truly loves her children no matter how their relationship changes.
