Grapes shrink when kept in sugar solution give reason

When the grape is placed in sugar water, a hypertonicsolution, water will move down the concentration gradient from high concentration (in the grape) to low concentration (the solution), causing it to shrink.

Hope it helps

Hi my dear friend,

An hypotonic solution has more solvent molecules hence low osmotic pressure. 1.) The grapes shrink in other words they become flaccid. This is because the concentrated sugar solution is hypertonic to the grape cells hence draws water from the cells by osmosis causing the cytoplasm of the grape cells to shrink.

~Thank you
